Mathematics Mastery 

MATHS AT CHADWELL 

At Chadwell Primary School, we want our pupils to leave as confident, curious and resilient mathematicians who can reason, problem-solve and communicate their mathematical understanding clearly. Before they leave school, our pupils should be able to use number fluently, make connections between mathematical concepts, explain their thinking using accurate mathematical vocabulary and apply their knowledge to a range of contexts within school and the wider world. 

We follow the Mathematics Mastery scheme of work by Ark Curriculum Plus. Mathematics Mastery is a whole-school mastery approach which supports pupils to develop deep conceptual understanding, mathematical thinking and confidence. The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils build secure knowledge over time and revisit key concepts in increasing depth. At Chadwell, we believe that all children can succeed in mathematics when learning is broken down carefully, modelled clearly and supported through rich mathematical talk, precise vocabulary and carefully chosen representations. 

 

The Dimensions of Depth underpin everything we do in Maths. These are: 

Conceptual Understanding: Pupils are supported to understand the structure of mathematics, not just memorise procedures. They use concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract symbols to make connections and explain why methods work. 

Language and Communication: Pupils are taught to speak like mathematicians. They use accurate mathematical vocabulary, known as Star Words, and are supported by stem sentences to explain, justify and reason in full sentences. 

Mathematical Thinking: Pupils are encouraged to spot patterns, make connections, ask questions, reason logically and solve problems. They are taught to explain their thinking and consider whether their answers are efficient, accurate and reasonable. 

Planning follows the Mathematics Mastery sequence and is supported by assessments before, during and after each unit. 

Before each unit: 

Teachers use pre-unit quizzes to identify what pupils already know and what they may need support with before beginning new learning. These quizzes help teachers to adapt planning, address gaps and ensure pupils are ready to access the upcoming unit. Where needed, pupils may receive additional support before or during the unit so that they can take part successfully in whole-class learning. 

During each unit: 

Lessons follow the Mathematics Mastery six-part lesson structure. This ensures that all pupils experience a consistent approach to learning and that the Dimensions of Depth are developed in every lesson. 

The six-part lesson structure: 

  1. Do Now
    Pupils begin with a short task that revisits prior learning, supports fluency and prepares them for the new learning in the lesson.
  2. New Learning
    The teacher introduces the key mathematical concept, models new learning clearly and uses carefully chosen representations to support understanding.
  3. Talk Task or Let’s Explore
    Pupils discuss mathematical ideas with a partner or group. This part of the lesson is central to developing oracy. Children are encouraged to use Star Words, stem sentences and full explanations to reason, justify and clarify their thinking.
  4. Develop Learning
    The teacher deepens and extends the learning. Misconceptions are addressed and pupils are supported to make links between representations, methods and mathematical structures.
  5. Independent Task
    Pupils apply their learning independently. Tasks are adapted where needed to provide appropriate support and challenge, allowing all pupils to practise, reason and demonstrate understanding.
  6. Plenary
    The lesson ends with an opportunity to review the key learning, address misconceptions and reflect on the mathematical thinking used during the lesson.

After each unit: 

Teachers use post-unit quizzes to evaluate pupils’ understanding and identify what has been securely learned. These assessments help teachers to plan future support, revisit key ideas and ensure that pupils continue to build strong mathematical foundations over time. 

 

Oracy in Maths 

Oracy is promoted throughout every Maths lesson at Chadwell. Pupils are expected to talk about mathematics, listen carefully to others and explain their reasoning using precise vocabulary. The Mathematics Mastery Dimensions of Depth place strong emphasis on language and communication, and this is reflected in our daily teaching. 

Children are introduced to Star Words so that they can understand and use accurate mathematical vocabulary. These words are revisited regularly, and pupils are encouraged to use them when explaining their methods, comparing strategies and answering questions. 

Stem sentences are used to support pupils in speaking and writing mathematically. They help children to structure their explanations, reason clearly and communicate in full sentences. For example, pupils may be supported to say: 

“The pattern I noticed is…” 
“I know this because…” 
“The most efficient strategy is…” 
“I agree/disagree because…” 
“The representation shows…” 

Through this approach, pupils develop confidence in expressing their ideas, challenging themselves and responding respectfully to the thinking of others. 

Pupils of Chadwell Primary School leave us with a secure understanding of key mathematical concepts and the confidence to apply their knowledge in different situations. They are able to reason, problem-solve and communicate effectively using appropriate mathematical language. This knowledge and experience support them to make a successful transition to Key Stage Three, whilst also preparing them for the mathematical demands of everyday life. 

Chadwell learners will succeed in Maths lessons as a result of carefully sequenced learning, appropriate scaffolds, rich mathematical discussion and opportunities to deepen understanding. They develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills through consistent routines and high expectations. Our pupils build resilience, independence and self-confidence by learning that mistakes and misconceptions are valuable parts of the learning process. Through Mathematics Mastery, children at Chadwell develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to become successful mathematicians and positive contributors to society.
