Chadwell Primary School

Equality Statement

As a school, we promote the Equality Act 2010, to ensure equal access for all pupils to all aspects of school life. This means that pupils, staff, governors and other stakeholders will promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and the mutual respect and tolerance of those in which the protected characteristics apply. The protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010 are: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation. This act aims to protect individuals from discrimination and harassment in various areas, including the workplace, based on these characteristics.

At Chadwell Primary School, we pride ourselves on our key values of unity, friendship, respect and aspiration, acknowledging and celebrating all of the protected characteristics. Our curriculum foundation has been built upon preparing future generations to live a meaningful life, standing up for what is right and presenting themselves with poise and self-respect.

We firmly believe that working towards a better society comprises of our curriculum acknowledging the protected characteristics, taking firm action against these to ensure that all individuals are treated with human dignity and have equitable access to opportunity.

We aim to challenge negative perceptions, challenging stereotypes against the protected characteristics providing our pupils with the confidence to be proud of who they and the families that they come from.

At Chadwell Primary School, aim to expose our pupils to quality content reflective of the world in which we live so that they develop a clear understanding of the wider society and how the protected characteristics are accepted into this. Providing these empowering examples and illuminating positive contributions of all members of our society will ensure that our pupils can learn to celebrate contributions of all people from a range of background.

We accept that such a transformation is an incredible challenge however, achieving justice and human rights for all is all part of the British value that we as a school promote.

Equality Objectives

The equality objectives of Chadwell Primary School focus on those areas where we have agreed to take action against all forms of inequality and to tackle disadvantage wherever it exists.

We will regularly review the progress we are making to meet our equality objectives.

Equality objective 1:  To raise the achievement of girls in Mathematics and Science to narrow the gender gap

Plans to achieve this objective:

Through the staff training timetable there will be opportunities for all teachers to discuss curriculum content and reflect on how this can best be delivered to engage and develop the confidence of girls so that they develop the necessary skills alongside their male peers. During year group meetings, the achievement of girls will be tracked and compared to that of boys so that next steps are discussed and strategies put in place to achieve our aim.

Equality objective 2: To ensure that the combined achievement of pupils from low income and disadvantaged families (FSM) is in line with that of all pupils

Ongoing Plans to achieve this objective:

During year group meetings with the phase as well as senior leaders, the progress of children from low-income and disadvantaged families will be discussed as a school priority. Progress and attainment in the core subjects will be monitored to ensure that they are working at least at age related expectations to ensure the gap is narrowed in comparison to other pupils. As a result of these discussions and actions, support and interventions will be established and regularly monitored. These will be recorded on the Impact Report that is regularly updated.

Equality objective 3: To promote an understanding of respecting differences.

Ongoing Progress we are making on this objective:

The school’s ethos and curriculum promote respect for the differences within the school community.  Issues are covered through lessons, assemblies, themed events and staff training.  The school promotes British Values and ensures that the many cultural and religious identities that exist in the school are implicitly and explicitly valued.

Equality objective 4: To Improve provision for pupils for whom English is an additional language, particularly new arrivals at the early stage of English acquisition

Progress we are making on this objective:

New arrivals to the school have an induction meeting with the Admissions Officer   and are provided with the school's welcome pack. In class, teachers will “buddy” new children with a child/children in the class.  The school has one experienced HLTA who will make assessments on their level of English to identify and organise appropriate support or interventions.
